Automation

Automation is a process which seeks to eliminate possible human errors, make operations more efficient and output more consistent. In order to do this several instruments are required, each based on the nature of the operation. Essentially, automation requires sensors, relays, PLCs or Programmable Logic Control and possibly a Variable Frequency Drive. PLCs are devices which contain a set of instructions which uses data relayed to it to control the output/state of the device to which it is connected. For High torque applications or applications with frequent Start/Stop functions a VFD is used to control the device to which it is connected. VFDs use the frequency of the electricity being sent to it and either starts, speeds up, or slows down the device it controls.

To date, more businesses than homes are employing automation, but rates of in-home use are increasing as individuals recognize the benefits of automating functions in and around their home.
